Frequently Asked Questions

 What does "Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu" mean?

Jiu-Jitsu translates to "the gentle art". It is referred to as such because the art utilizes leverage and balance rather than force and strength. The main goal of BJJ is to submit your opponent via a choke, joint lock or other submission hold, although matches can also be won via points. The finishing submissions are viewed as a more humane alternative to striking, and the nature of the ‘tapout’ allows the art to be practiced at full force without fear of injury.

Is BJJ all grappling and wrestling?

Jiu-Jitsu includes takedowns, grappling and ground fighting techniques. It is a fact that nearly all real fights will go to the ground. BJJ always prepares its practitioners for a physically superior opponent, someone much bigger and stronger. On the ground, leverage can be used to control and submit even the largest of foes. First Colony focuses mainly on the ground, though we teach all facets of Jiu-Jitsu, including defense against stand-up aggression and ground fighting. You will be learning how to deal with an individual from beginning (establishing base, closing the distance, taking the fight to the ground) to end (achieving a dominant position and submit your opponent)

I'm not in the best shape. Can I still take a Jiu-Jitsu Class?

Of course! In fact, our beginner classes are an excellent way to get into shape. Not only will you learn the essential skills of self-defense, but you will also focus on muscle strengthening and endurance, cardio, and flexibility.

YOU DON’T NEED TO GET IN SHAPE BEFORE STARTING BJJ!

If you can walk into the classroom, you’re ready to begin.

What is the belt system in Jiu-Jitsu?

Belts in BJJ include white, blue, purple, brown, and black. Each successive belt represents an increased mastery of the art.

How long does it take to obtain a black belt?

This varies for each individual however it is usually between 8 and 15 years.

What are some of the physical benefits of training Jiu-Jitsu?

Along with the obvious self-defense benefits, BJJ will improve conditioning, strength, coordination, flexibility and overall reflexes. Further, and perhaps more importantly, BJJ will give you increased mental health, self-confidence, and problem solving skills.

How are classes structured?

Classes include exercises, stretching and BJJ related movements to help improve conditioning, coordination, flexibility and strength. This period will be followed by the techniques of the week, demonstrated by the instructor, then drilled by the students. A live sparring session for the intermediate and advanced students concludes the class.

I have a very busy schedule, how many classes per week do you offer?

We are happy to offer classes every day of the week, with the sole exception of Sundays,

I have never done martial arts before and I feel a little apprehensive. How easy is it to get started?

Most people feel some anxiety about starting a martial arts program which is why we feature Beginner classes on Tuesday and Thursday night. These classes will ensure that you familiarize yourself with the school, the instructors and allow you to feel comfortable with the techniques before you begin live sparring.

Do I have to enter competitions?

Competition is always completely optional. Our school strives to provide a positive environment for students and we never place any pressure on them to compete. That said, we always remain ready to prepare those students that do wish to compete.

I don't have a lot of time, what is the commitment required to progress at a normal pace?

60 minutes, 2 to 3 times a week will produce exceptional results.
